Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan yesterday sought to discuss security issues concerning the local Chinese community with Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Cui Jianchun.
He was accompanied by newly appointed Police Commissioner, Leslie James.
High on the list of concerns for the ambassador was the string of burglaries that seemed to disproportionately target Chinese businesses. Reports indicate that many Chinese business owners have lost properties to theft, and some have even been subjected to violence.
Because the Chinese business community feels as though it is being targeted, Minister Ramjattan and Commissioner Leslie James have committed to meeting with them to address these concerns as soon as possible. In advance, they have committed to employing a strategic increase of police patrols in key, commercial areas in Georgetown and some other communities. They also indicated that recent statistics on crime do not suggest that Chinese are being racially profiled; that the Chinese business community and, by extension, the Chinese demographic, have no reason to feel as though they are under threat or being discriminated against. The Ministry of Public Security expressed that reports of burglaries are as a result of opportunistic criminals who prey on those who seem vulnerable.
Additionally, the Ambassador and Minister Ramjattan discussed the loan that China is providing to Guyana for the Smart City Project, as well as the China-Caribbean Countries Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Conference recently concluded in Grenada.
The People’s Republic of China, according to Minister Ramjattan, has the gratitude of the Government of Guyana for all the support it has provided, including the support in assets and materials given to the Guyana Police Force, and the training of its ranks.
