Schools across Guyana, including those in Linden officially opened their doors for the new school term on September 3, despite strike action that teachers had staged for salary increases.
The strike however saw several parents, keeping their children at home.
However things eventually returned to normalcy after arbitration was decided upon by both sides and schools were officially opened on Monday last.
But two nursery schools in Linden, the One Mile Nursery and Wisroc Nursery had not opened because of unfinished rehabilitative works according to disgruntled parents.
The children from One Mile Nursery were as a result housed at the Wismar Hill Primary school.
But parents of the pupils of the Wisroc Primary School were forced to keep their children at home. One vocal parent vented: “we already had to keep these children at home due to the strike, now because of nonsense, the children can’t go to their rightful school…they got to be shifting them to another school. It is very frustrating and hard on parents.”
Another parent named Donna(only name given) also voiced her disapproval at this state of affairs.
“I think it’s ridiculous that construction is now being done on my child’s school since the Ministry and the relevant authorities had two months plus an extra week of strike action to get the building ready for the kids. It’s funny how when the Ministry is at fault no one thinks it best to notify parents!”
But Acting Regional Education Officer, Keane Adams is blaming the tardiness of the contractors, who he said did not complete the rehabilitative works in a timely manner.
“This is something that’s been happening all the time, it’s very frustrating and totally unacceptable.”
Adams however pointed out that the One Mile Nursery resumed classes at the school on Wednesday, while the Wisroc Nursery should be ready by Monday.
