Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo yesterday insisted that he considered embattled Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) General Manager Sherod Duncan to be “ably qualified and competent” for the position he holds.
He made these remarks yesterday while speaking to members of the media at State House.
Nagamootoo’s expression of confidence in the embattled newspaper boss comes on the heels of ongoing investigations into Duncan’s spending and his termination of the company’s Finance Controller, Moshamie Ramotar.
The Prime Minister said he would reserve judgment on the matter until completion of the investigation but nevertheless, seized the opportunity to pronounce on Duncan’s quality as General Manager.
“And if I may say so, he has a vision of helping to digitize the newspaper, putting it in a way that all other media in the world are now going in a direction where they deal more with the social media perception and concept of the role of media.” “Buck Stops With Me” Yesterday, Duncan, who is now on leave pending the outcome of the investigations, pleaded his case once again on Facebook. In a statement appearing on the popular social media platform, the General Manger wrote that he accepted “full responsibility for all of the spending” and “leaked information”. He went further to add that the buck stopped at him.
He wrote, “Criticisms are important if constructive and in context. For instance, without prejudice to the investigations, it was stated in an online article that I bought a “rocker”. Context for the spending will show that a retiring employee after more than thirty-years of service to GNNL was gifted a recliner. I believe in treating hard working employees well. I take full responsibility for it.”
Duncan is alleged to have, within his probation period as General Manager, spent $5M, in just less than three months on the job. He reportedly spent the monies, in the absence of the board, on furniture, a laptop and repairs to vehicles, among other things.
Following the leakage of the spending, Duncan, as GM, issued the entity’s Finance Comptroller, Moshamie Ramotar, with a termination letter.
The news of the sacking caused Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo to converge an emergency meeting. The Prime Minister further instructed that a full investigation be conducted by the board on both matters – the leakage of information and the termination of the Finance Comptroller.
