Eighteen year-old Eton Calistro was on Monday sentenced to serve 10 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to a manslaughter charge when he appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown.
Calistro admitted that between July 18 and 19, 2015 at Soesdyke Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he unlawfully killed 21-year-old CD vendor Leroy Moore also called ‘Jim Carey’ and ‘Carey’.
According to reports, Moore, formerly of Caneview Avenue, South Ruimveldt Gardens, Georgetown, was stabbed twice in the chest during an altercation with four men at the bar. Facts revealed that Calistro became annoyed and stabbed Moore over him speaking with a young lady at the bar.
Kaieteur News understands that the young man would frequent the community to ply his trade as a push cart CD vendor.
Police, in a release said that Moore was at the bar when he became involved in an argument with a group of men and was repeatedly stabbed. Police said that the injured man was subsequently rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post mortem performed on the remains of Moore revealed that he died from perforation of the heart and lungs due to stab wounds.
In court, Calistro was represented by Attorney-at-law George Thomas. Before passing sentence on the teenager, Justice Kissoon took into consideration the aggravating factors and the circumstances under which the stabbing occurred.
In arriving at a sentence for Calistro, Justice Kissoon started at a base of 25 years. He however deducted a total of 15 years including for the time Calistro spent on remand pending trial and also for the aggravating and mitigating circumstances.
Calistro had appeared before Justice Brassington Reynolds in July and pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.
His trial was expected to start then, but it was delayed after Calistro’s then Attorney-at-law Stanley Moore, withdrew his services.
The reason for the lawyer taking such a course was revealed in court. Nevertheless, Justice Reynolds granted the murder accused time to retain another lawyer. Hence, the matter was recalled on Monday when Calistro decided to change his plea to the lesser count manslaughter.
The case for the prosecution was presented by State Counsel, Abigail Gibbs.
