Previously hospitalised in isolation, Carlton Blake was yesterday finally allowed to enter a court to be charged for allegedly killing a gold miner during a robbery in the North West District six years ago.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and was remanded until November 6.
The matter will be transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates Court.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said he intended to call ten witnesses.
It is alleged that Blake murdered Cleveland Smithet at Black Sand Five Star Backdam, North West Essequibo, on December 13, 2011.
Smithet, 37, of Kuru Kururu was shot dead while his brother Trevor Smithet, 40, also of Kuru Kururu, was wounded. According to reports, the accused ordered Smithet to kneel before shooting him and escaping with his jewellery.
Police had taken the accused to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court in November 2017. However, because of his medical condition, Blake was not allowed to enter Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan’s courtroom. He also had to be isolated from other prisoners. A staff of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) also told the court that Blake had been hospitalised in isolation for over seven months and would have to be on treatment for the next two years since his kidneys are failing and his blood glucose level is most times above the normal limit.
The magistrate on December 4, 2017, then ordered that the accused be kept in isolation and under guard at the GPHC.
