A stern warning was sent out on Friday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to a police prosecutor. This was the second time a witness who has to testify on behalf of the prosecution in a particular matter was absent from court.
However, if that witness is absent again, the prosecution will have to close its case against 23-year-old Dason Jupiter of Albouystown, Georgetown.
Jupiter is charged with attempted murder, over shooting a La Penitence, Georgetown market vendor to the head.
Police Prosecutor, Neville Jeffers has disclosed that the witness is abroad on vacation. The prosecutor said that he will make attempts to have the witness in court on August 13, for the next court hearing.
It is alleged that on April 2, last, at Saffon Street, Jupiter discharged a loaded firearm at Doodnauth Danrasi, with intent to commit murder.
Another charge stated that on April 2 at Saffon Street, while being in company of others and armed with a gun, Jupiter robbed Hardai Danrasi, Doodnauth’s wife.
According to reports, on April 2, last, at around 17:20 hrs, Doodnauth and his wife were selling at La Penitence Market, Georgetown, when three men pounced on them.
Doodnauth, 62, had just offloaded stocks on the stall when one of the men, armed with a gun, demanded that he hand over cash. Two other bandits were on the lookout.
They targeted Doodnauth’s wife who was wearing an apron containing cash.
In coming to his wife’s defence, Doodnauth pulled a knife on the gunman who in turn shot him to the head before snatching $150,000 from the wife’s apron.
The bandits then escaped by riding through James Street, Albouystown.
