The Berbice Cricket Season restarted on Wednesday last with the hosting of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club’s Patron Green Economy Cricket Tournament. The Tournament is being organised by the Berbice Cricket Board with sponsorship from the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club’s Patron Fund as part of the Club’s celebration of President David Granger 73rd Birthday.
Ten teams are participating in the Tournament after the late withdrawal of the Young Warriors Cricket Club due to internal problems. Police Sports Club therefore gained a walkover, while Albion Cricket Club drew the Bye.
The first round match between Blairmont and West Berbice was not played due to the condition of both teams’ grounds and would be played later. Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets, Rose Hall Canje and Skeldon advanced to the Second Round after easily winning their matches vs Upper Corentyne, Tucber Park and Port Mourant respectively. The first two rounds of matches would be played on the 10/10 format, while the Semifinals and Finals would be played 20/20.
At the Albion Ground, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets defeated Upper Corentyne by 22 runs. Batting first, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets reached 82 for 5 from their allotted ten overs with Jason Sinclair 30 and Eon Hooper 20 being the principal scorers. Bowling for Upper Corentyne, Naeem Yacoob took two wickets for six runs and Omesh Khemraj 2 for 10. In reply, the visitors found severe difficulties in facing the pace attack of the Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets especially Keon Sinclair, Sylus Tyndall and Clinton Pestano and were restricted to 60 for 3. Rishi Persaud topscored with 22, while Devendra Budhoo and Lakeram Lathman were left unbeaten on 16 and 13 respectively.
At the Port Mourant Ground, the visiting Skeldon Team created a huge upset to defeat Port Mourant Cricket Club by 20 runs. Skeldon scored 75 for 8 off their allotted overs with Ryan Ramdass scoring 33 runs with four huge sixes and a boundary, while Sherwin Murray supported with 17. Parmeshwar Chanderpaul took five for eight and Dimitri Cameron 2 for 12 for the home team. In reply, Port Mourant Cricket Club were bundled out for 55 in 7.3 overs as only Andy Mohan 22 and Azhar Mohamed 10 reaching double figures. Veteran medium pacer Victor Pedro and off spinner Deon Esau took three wickets a piece for eight and eleven respectively.
Rose Hall Canje, making a welcome return to First Division Cricket after a prolonged absence, created another major upset by defeating favourite Tucber Park by seven wickets. Tucber Park Cricket Club scored 73 for 6 with Garfield Benjamin 25 and Mark Bender 15 being the principal scorers. Krishan Ramcharran 2 for 7 and Mark Sampson 2 for 8 were the best bowlers for the home teams. Rocky Bipat then blasted 31 with three boundaries along with Kristoff Bahadur 17 to see their team to 74 for 3 in 7.4 Overs. Kellon Pellew, Romel Retemia and Joel Davis all took one wicket each in a losing cause.
Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster expressed relief that the Cricket Season had finally started after the long delay due to rain. He also expressed delight that all the teams were properly uniformed as the Berbice Cricket Board strives to return discipline to Berbice Cricket. The winning team would take home $150,000 and the Patron’s Cup Trophy.
