The woman who confessed to killing her 72-year-old lover is claiming she accidentally shot him while they struggled over his shotgun.
She claims the shooting occurred during a quarrel in which Deonarine, also called ‘Russia’, accused her of being unfaithful and had attempted to shoot her.
Kaieteur News understands that one of the woman’s hands bore a cut which she claimed she sustained while grabbing onto a knife with which Deonarine had tried to stab her.
Yesterday, the 46-year-old woman took police, including ranks from the Major Crimes Unit, to an area in the Pomeroon River where she claimed she tossed the shotgun.
However, police failed to find the firearm after hours of searching.
Kaieteur News understands that police are likely to discontinue the search and will seek legal advice in the case.
A postmortem was conducted yesterday.
In her confession two days ago, the woman, of Charity, Essequibo, reportedly told investigators that an argument had broken out between them after Deonarine accused her of having other men.
As the quarrel escalated, he reportedly picked up a knife, which she held onto. She claimed that the farmer then grabbed a shotgun but she held onto the firearm, which was accidentally discharged during a struggle
Deonarine was shot in the abdomen.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Charity Hospital.
The woman had initially painted herself as a heroine who had attempted to protect Deonarine from a masked and armed intruder who had confronted the farmer at his Pomeroon home last Friday.
She had claimed that they were sitting at a table when Deonarine went to answer a call at the front door. She claimed he was confronted by a ‘masked man’ who was armed.
The woman claimed that she held onto the intruder’s firearm, but that the ‘masked man’ then pulled out a knife.
Deonarine’s lover claimed, she also held onto the knife, while Deonarine attempted to flee downstairs.
She claimed that the ‘gunman’ then pushed her down, pursued Deonarine, shot him in the abdomen, then fled the scene.
