Found guilty on a majority verdict on Friday at the Berbice High Court was Wazir Ali of Bermine Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Ali was convicted of raping a 17-year -old disabled girl in 2015.
He was represented by Attorney-at-law, Charandass Persaud.
According to the facts of the case, Ali who was tasked with transporting church members, among whom was the disabled teen, raped the young woman after dropping off all the members.
Five witnesses were called by Prosecutor Tuana Hardy while three were called by the defence, including the pastor of the church of which the victim was a member.
The defence’s case was that the accused was at work during the month of April, hence he was not around to have committed the act.
A probation report was ordered by Justice Joann Barlow by the next court date on August 27 when Ali would be sentenced.
