Councillors from the APNU/AFC Administration are accused of being absent from meetings at the Region Six Democratic Council, too often. At Thursday’s statutory meeting, there were only three Councillors, two from APNU while one sat in for the AFC.
It should be noted that there are eleven APNU/AFC Councillors with 19 representing the PPP. Seventeen Opposition members were present on Thursday.
According to Regional Chairman David Armogan, the Councillors representing the government are “not bringing ideas to the table and few contribute to topics.”
In support of what the Chairman said, the lone AFC Councillor, Gobin Harbhajan stated that, “RDC Councillors are put to represent the people of the region and if they will keep being absent, then I am calling on Councillors on both sides for them to do the right thing and resign and give others to serve the people. Councillors have a responsibility to serve the people and by not coming to these meetings, what it means is that is the people will lose out.
“For the regional 2018 budget most of them were absent”.
He said that as an AFC Councillor and Prime Minister representative, he believes it is unfair to the people in Berbice.
Harbhajan pointed out that when Ministers visit the region, they are bombarded with minor complaints when those very complaints could be dealt with at the Regional level.
Harbhajan who was very vocal on the issue lamented, “Councillors on the government side should be at all RDC meetings to push the government policy and central government ideas.”
For the past three statutory meetings, Councillors on the government side were noticeably absent.
