Aug 04, 2018 Letters
Dear Sir/Madam,
It is with profound grief and dissatisfaction that I write this letter; so that the relevant authorities can investigate the circumstances, which lead to the death of my unborn grandchild.
My daughter’s due date for her baby was the 22nd July, 2018 and she was informed by the doctor that if she does not go into labor by this date he will induce labor on the next clinic day; which was on Thursday 26th July, 2018.
I took my pregnant daughter to the hospital to deliver her first baby and after approximately 48 hours on Saturday 28th July 2018, I was told that her baby died.
At this time I am unable to give you the names of the nurses; but the doctor in charge of her was Dr. Galton Roberts, whose registration number is listed on the medical council website as 1030.
Throughout my daughter’s pregnancy, she attend his private clinic; his reports indicated that the baby and the mother were in good health. Dr. Roberts checked my daughter on the 28th July 2018 sent her for an ultra sound, around 11:00 hours . It showed that everything was fine; the baby’s head was positioned downwards in a state of readiness.
Next he inserted a pill into her birth canal and instructed her to go to the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was admitted around 3 o’clock in the afternoon and given medication. Dr. Roberts promised to check on her that afternoon but never showed up. He appeared the next morning around 08:00, and told my daughter that the pill did not work so he inserted half of the same pill used previously.
He then told her that he will be back at 5 o’clock in the afternoon to check on her, this time he showed up and told her that he does not know why her body was rejecting the pill, again he inserted another half of the pill into her birth canal.
He then checked the baby’s heart rate and told her it was decreasing, and he also told her that her fluids were drying out but there was no need to be alarmed .He also told her that if she does not deliver by 21:00 hours he will have to do an emergency C-Section.
He then asked the nurses to check on her as the night progressed. My daughter told me that she fell asleep around 18:00 hours and woke up around 07:00 hours. My daughter stated that no one came to check on her during this period of time.
A few minutes after she woke up; a nurse came in and checked my child and then she summoned a colleague to come into my daughter’s room; both nurses told her they were not feeling a heartbeat from the baby. She was sent to do an ultrasound which confirmed that there was no heartbeat.
Dr. Roberts told her that he was sorry; and he stated that the fluid in the amniotic sack dried up and the baby was resting against her stomach walls, which may have caused the baby to suffocate.
Dr. Roberts did not offer any comfort to the family; he was rude, uncouth and dismissive. In fact,he chased all the relatives out of the room including the baby’s father; he said to the top of his voice, “OUT!”
I am kindly asking the Ministry of Health, The Medical Council OF Guyana and The Guyana Nurses Association to investigate the unwarranted death of my grandchild. I strongly feel that the nurses as well as the doctor did not follow protocol and were grossly negligent.
Thank you.
Sincerely.
Samantha Bacchus.
