A 32-year-old dredge owner was yesterday fined $100,000 after he was found guilty by a City Magistrate of stealing a gold wash plant, a piece of mining equipment, worth some $10M.
The man, Vickram Singh, a father of two, had been on trial before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. He had been out on $500,000 bail pending trial.
Between February 1 and February 15, at King Street, Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, Singh, stole the wash plant, valued $10M, property of Maria Ferreira.
Ferreira had told the court that Singh came to her home with a truck and removed the item while she was not present.
In delivering her ruling, the Chief Magistrate told the court that sufficient evidence was led by the prosecution to prove the elements of the offence.
According to the trial Magistrate, the evidence presented by the prosecution’s witnesses was not discredited and that the court believed their stories. The Magistrate said that after considering the evidence in its entirety, it was evident that Singh stole the item.
Singh was ordered to pay the fine or in default spend 18 months in jail. He was also instructed by the court to return the wash plant to its owner. However, Ferreira indicated that the item is damaged and that she will be seeking legal action in the High Court.
