One of the country’s most outspoken advocate for gold miners has died.
According to the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA), it is mourning the loss of its former Executive Secretary and founder member who passed away Wednesday in the USA after a period of illness.
“Mr. Edward Anthony Shields, a former Vietnam veteran, joined the mining association in 1984 and served it faithfully until his passing. He was 72 years old.”
The Association said it mourns the loss of the mining stalwart.
“His guidance and tenacity will be missed. He was a friend of the miners and a champion for miners rights in Guyana.”
Shields has led many delegations during his long tenure in sometimes rocky negotiations with Government for better mining conditions.
According to the Association, Shields will be cremated in the USA. A memorial service and wake will be held in Guyana at a date to be announced later.
