A former labourer attached to the Albion Sugar Factory and of Lot 370 Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne, Berbice was yesterday sentenced to 30 years imprisonment at the Berbice High Court.
Jainarine ‘Payo’ Balgobin, was charged with murdering 53-year-old Bhumattie ‘Mommy Gold’ Deolall, of Lot 351 Belvedere Squatting Area on November 2, 2016. The accused had pleaded guilty in July. He was represented by Attorney Sasha Roberts of Legal Aid.
Balgobin’s probation report, which was read before the sentencing yesterday, noted, that the accused’s behaviour changes when he is under the influence of alcohol. This would regularly have the now deceased intervening in his disputes with his family members. He was described as quiet when not under the influence.
The report also stated that Balgobin could not recall committing the crime since he had alcohol in his system.
His attorney requested that the judge take into consideration that her client has taken full responsibility for his actions and the act was planned.
Before the sentence was handed down, Justice Jo-Ann Barlow stated that she took into consideration that Balgobin chopped the victim five times but lamented that he should have stayed away from alcohol given the effects it has on him when making decisions.
Balgobin was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment with five years deducted for the time already spent in prison and five years for not wasting the courts time. An order was also given to expose Balgobin to anger management sessions.
The accused after hearing the sentence, apologized for his actions and stated “me wasn’t in meh senses”. He further promised to stay away from alcohol.
The relatives of Deolall were outraged at the sentence and stated that they were not satisfied with it. One of the woman’s daughters said, “He come in my mother yard and chop out she neck and now he can come out and do it again. This is not fair”.
Balgobin in 2016 had entered a “Madras Temple” situated next door to his house and removed a machete from the altar. He reportedly went over to Deolall’s yard and called her out. There, he viciously chopped her to her neck, almost severing her head from her body.
She then slumped in a corner as she breathed her last breath. He allegedly walked back over to the “Temple” and rested the machete back on the altar where he found it.
Balgobin was reported to have walked back over to his home as if he had committed no crime, but was subsequently held by his brother-in-law until the authorities arrived and arrested him. While in custody, he had told investigators that his master had sent him to kill the woman, referring to a spiritual god he served.
