Bandits on a motorbike escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash after shooting 60-year-old money-changer Rickford Richardson, called “Bigga,” in the left leg in the vicinity of America and Longden Streets at around 13:15 hrs yesterday.
According to reports, Richardson, who had been plying his trade for over three decades, was on the pavement near Fazia’s Collections Store when two men rode up on a motorcycle and stopped in front of him.
The rider then revved the motorcycle, but Richardson just assumed that the men were waiting to pass a car that had stopped on the road.
The pillion rider then dismounted, drew a handgun from his waist and pointed it at Richardson.
According to the money-changer’s son, his father immediately handed over the money that he had in his hand at the time.
Nevertheless, the bandit opened fire, shooting Richardson in the left leg.
One witness said that other money-changers who were nearby ran for cover on hearing the gunshot.
An eyewitness said that the pillion rider was wearing a white jersey and had it pulled up over his face as he rode off.
His accomplice was described as a Strapping, brown-complexioned individual from a well-known area in the city.
Richardson was up to late last night awaiting surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Just last October, America Street money-changer Shawn Nurse, called ‘Fabulous’, was shot in the face during a struggle with a gunman, who was attempting to relieve him of a large sum of foreign and local currency.
The father of three died at the scene, while his killer fled with an undisclosed sum of cash and a quantity of gold jewellery.
Three men were subsequently charged.
