Having rubbed shoulders in the camp of former Guyana strongman Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan and currently being trained for more success by one of Guyana’s greatest in the sport, ‘Big’ John Edwards, current powerlifting standout Carlos ‘The Showstopper’ Petterson is set on following in the footsteps of his mentors and even surpassing their exploits.
The 24 year-old Petterson and seven other athletes including two females will wing out of Guyana today destined for Mexico City, Mexico where they are aiming to be standouts at the 16th Annual IPF/ NAPF North American Regional Powerlifting Championship from August, 1-4.
Petterson, who has been a hit since he came onto the scene about four years ago has been going through an intense training routine and believes that he is ready to conquer. Such was his confidence that, in consultation with his Coach, John Edwards, he decided to enter the recent Guyana Amateur Body Building & Fitness Federation Senior competition where he competed in the Heavyweight class which he won.
Now, it’s on to Mexico where he is confident that another successful chapter would be scripted.
Before his departure, long time supporter, Fitness Express made a contribution towards Petterson’s expenses. Manager Jamie Mc Donald said that himself and company was heartened by the way Petterson has evolved and the admirable level of discipline and commitment he has been showing not only in powerlifting but also in body building.
”So, like we have been doing with other athletes, we had no hesitation in assisting Mr. Petterson to get to Mexico where we are confident that he would continue to excel not only for himself, but also for Guyana.” Petterson expressed thanks to Mc Donald for his unflinching support to him.
Apart from the aforementioned weights sports, Peterson has also been competitive in Arm Wrestling.
Petterson commented on his aim for Mexico: “My main aim in Mexico is looking to set new international records but most of all world records such as in the Classic Squat and Dead Lift.
My Ultimate aim is to become one of the world’s greatest lifters ever, besides becoming world champion and this means that I must continue training hard.
I would like to express sincere thanks to Fitness Express, Jamie McDonald, Charles Ramson, Space Gym, Guyana Shore Base Inc (GYSBY), Guyana Gold Fields Inc./Aurora Gold Mines Inc. and some other individuals who would like to remain private, they know themselves. Your collective support has given me the extra drive to aim for the skies.”
The other members of the Guyana team travelling to Mexico are Frank Tucker, Grace Babb, Erwyn Smith, Nadina Taharally, Franklyn Brisport, Paul Adams and the USA based, Nairianjan Singh.
