DEAR EDITOR,
In response to your editorial dated July 26, 2018 “The crime situation has no immediate solution”. I differ on that point of view, since in my opinion, crime can be controlled if proper preventative measures are put in place.
The killing of bandits within the last few months by police officers has shown that criminals will do anything possible to attack their prey.
You have raised interesting points, which in my view contribute to the increase in criminal behaviour within society.
Firstly, you mentioned the educational system, which is in place at the present time, which in my view and I agree with you, is heavily academic. Secondly, the churches have gone silent and separated themselves from society. They are not seen in the neighbourhoods assisting the youth. Thirdly, parents have a vital role in the socialisation of their children. I am not a sociologist but it’s my view that some parents failed miserably in that process. Fourthly, the courts have a vital role to play in the prevention of crime. Criminals are very versed in the court system and use it to their advantage. The courts must be seen as a deterrent to crime, therefore it is important for the courts to be firm in sentencing.
Finally, government has a social responsibility to protect its citizens and it’s important for government to be proactive in its approach in crime prevention.
It is important to note that the criminal underworld has a way in collecting intelligence just as the police collect their own.
The gentleman who was awakened by the noise and called the police must be complimented, and the police’s quick response must also be praised. On many occasions, the public has been very critical about the police response.
As I mentioned before in previous letters, the only way that crime can be reduced is by adopting the three crime prevention measures – social, situational and tertiary – and furthermore they must work together to have a positive outcome.
