Anthony Downes (seated left) and Kalyca Fraser also seated are pictured with the other winners and top performers and GBTI representatives following the presentation of prizes.
A handful of spectators watched on, on a cold and windy night at the Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry (GBTI) Lawn Tennis Court in Bel Air on Tuesday night as defending Men’s Open Champion Anthony Downes overcame a couple of stoppages due to rain and an injured leg to successfully defend a title he has won for past eight years.
This year Downes, several levels in standard above the other competitors, trounced Jonathon Fagundes 4-0 in a one sided battle. In the Ladies Open Final, number one seed Cristy Campbell was forced to retire during the second set against eventual Champion Kalyca Fraser after she began suffering cramps during the first set with the score tied at 4-4 after completing the first set, 7-6.
After taking a medical time out with the score 2-1, Campbell returned to the Court but in obvious pain and was eventually forced to retire hurt at 4-2 thus forfeiting the match. The presentation of prizes took place on Wednesday.
