In a Statement from several Berbice Cricket teams, they are citing unfair treatment. Here is the full text of the statement released by the teams:
It is no secret that West Indies Cricket needs all the help it can get as it struggles to lift itself from the bottom of the ladder. The foundation of success for any country involved in cricket is the strength of the grass root clubs.
In Guyana, there are very few clubs who on a regular basis produces players for our beloved country and are able to keep they heads above water in these difficult economic times. Cricket is a very expense game to play and as such it is very difficult for clubs to play both Junior and senior levels. Costs include uniforms, transportation, meals, cricket gears, balls for matches and practice among others.
In Berbice many clubs are no longer functioning due to the costs associated with playing the game and now it is up to clubs like Blairmont, Albion, RHTYSC, Young Warriors and Tucber Park to produce cricketers for the Ancient County.
These clubs receive no subventions or incentives from the Guyana Cricket Board or Cricket West Indies when our players go on to play for Guyana and the Windies .We are given the courtesy of a basic ‘thank you’ letter for our effort.
No one has the time to find out how we survive but now it seems that our efforts to raise funds would be affected by the GCB.
Blairmont CC recently applied for permission for a fund raising match and was not given permission despite applying to CWI.
Blairmount were informed on the morning of the match that no GCB contracted player or National U-15, 17 or 19 Cricketer who represented Guyana this year were not allowed to play in the tournament and include the players produced by the Blairmont CC.
We are very concerned that Berbice clubs cannot use their own players in matches to raise funds for themselves.
Why must we then continue to produce outstanding players, if they become properties of the GCB after they become National Players? The clubs and their own parents lose all rights to an organisation that played no role in their development.
The Blairmont CC suffered great financial losses due to the big names like Motie, Permaul, Bramble and Pestano being unable to play.
Albion and the RHTYSC were forced to play their second eleven teams and we are very concerned about this development.
We would be very grateful if the GCB can please stop targeting Berbice Cricket as we are aware that players in the other two counties play in all type of matches and tournaments without any sanctions being imposed.
It is totally unfair for us to be unable to organize fund raising events and our own players cannot be a part of it.
The very future of Guyana Cricket is at stake as more clubs would close their doors. We would not become the manufactures of players and then watch on while others become their owners even while they are MINORS.
Our players belong to us as it is the management at the different clubs who work every day to develop them.
We also want our efforts at fundraising to be supported as the funds are used on cricket development and our members. The GCB should treat all clubs in Guyana equally and not target Berbice.
October 1st turn off your lights to bring about a change!
