A 17-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in jail after he was found guilty on a charge of felonious wounding. Hemnarine Hardyal called “Buckman” of Lot 2 Fyrish Long Dam, Corentyne, Berbice, was found guilty of severing the left hand of 59-year-old Jaillall Persaud called “Punky” a fisherman of Fyrish Long Dam, Corentyne, Berbice. The incident occurred on December 18, 2017.
The matter came up before Magistrate Renita Singh in the Albion Magistrate’s Court.
The facts as narrated by Prosecutor Inspector Althea Solomon are that on the day in question the two were among a group of persons at a Wake House in the Fyrish area when a misunderstanding developed among them.
Hardyal left the scene and returned with a cutlass which he used to sever the hand of Persaud. Hardyal attempted to chop in the region of the victim’s neck, but the latter used his left hand to block the blow, the chop thus severing the man’s hand below his wrist. Persaud fell to the ground and was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where he was admitted and underwent emergency surgery.
The accused was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.
