A 49-year-old man is feared dead after he fell into the Atlantic Ocean – some metres away from a sluice at Trafalgar, West Coast Berbice – following a crab-hunting expedition with his wife.
Feared dead is Heron Ewart Anthony of Number 29 Village, WCB, and an employee of RUSAL.
According to information received, Anthony and his wife had just concluded their crab hunting exercise and he was cleansing himself of the mud at the Trafalgar sluice. It was while he was washing off that his foot skidded on the slippery mud, and he tumbled into the rushing waters. The sluice, which was reportedly opened at the time, saw the rough waters pushing him further away from his wife.
His wife, Alicia, who watched on helplessly and shouted for Anthony, said that her husband pointed his fingers in the direction of the beach where she assumed that he was telling her that the waters will lead him there.
At that point, she rushed to the sluice’s attendant a short distance away and sought his assistance. Upon her return, she saw no trace of her husband.
A Guyana Defence Force vessel is assisting with the search for Anthony.
