The 37-year-old husband who allegedly torched a lumber yard during a domestic dispute last Saturday night has been freed.
Magistrate Crystal Lambert dismissed a charge of setting fire to a building against Ramesh Thakur yesterday after his wife, Bibi Shaheada Thakur, declined to give evidence.
The accused had appeared in the Vreed-en Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
Police had detained the accused shortly after a lumber yard that is said to be owned by Thakur and his wife went up in flames at around 20.30 hrs on Saturday.
The lumber yard is located at Lot 40 Alliance, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara – property his wife occupied.
In a release, police said that the couple separated about a year, and have a matter of division of property filed in the High Court.
Police stated that the wife was at home when she heard a knock on the window. On looking outside, she saw the suspect with a knife.
It was alleged that the man then rammed his Canter into his wife’s car, PXX 509, then went to the lumber yard which is located to the northern side of the house and set it on fire. Damage is estimated to be some $20M.
