Lazio FC emerged champions of the Bartica Football Association (BFA) Under-17 tournament on Saturday afternoon last which was sponsored by the Bartica Baptist Church and its affiliate, Victory International Missions.
Held at the Bartica Secondary School Ground, Lazio got the better of Rising Stars 3-2 in what was an exciting conclusion to the tournament. Battling it out in a heavy downpour of rain, Lazio was the first to get on the score sheet in the 21st minute by way of a Jevon Harris strike but their opponents were not willing to be outdone and quickly answered by way of a perfectly struck penalty kick by Mark Subrattie, following a hand ball in the box.
The deadlock was again broken by Lazio when Antonio Perriera got one past the Stars’ goalkeeper, Inzamam ul Hack Bacchus, just before the break. Returning for the second half, both teams pieced together some exciting back-and-forth exchanges despite the soggy conditions.
But it was Lazio that rocked the nets once again when Daniel Martin broke free from the opponent’s defence and got his shot off at goal. Proceedings ended 3-2 in favour of Lazio after Rising Stars’ Mark Subrattie converted his second penalty kick seconds before the final whistle.
In the third place encounter played earlier between Potaro Strikers and Mil Ballers United, saw a Daniel Gardner double, assisted by one goal from Joshua Jones, ensured that Potaro Strikers took full honours away with a 3-0 victory.
Pastor of the Bartica Baptist Church thanked all the clubs for their participation in the month-long tournament, while the representatives of Victory International Missions presented trophies, medals and balls to the winners.
Victory International Missions is associated with the Baptist Movement and the organization is currently providing Medical and Evangelistic Outreach to the Bartica Community.
