A bitter property dispute between a West Bank Demerara couple escalated at around 22.00 hrs on Saturday after an angry ex-husband allegedly rammed a truck into his estranged wife’s car before torching the family’s lumber yard.
Police said that the 37-year-old husband was detained shortly after the lumber yard, said to be worth millions and located at Lot 40 Alliance, Canal Number Two, West Bank Demerara property his wife occupied, went up in flames.
Police said that the wife, identified as Bibi Shaheada Thakir, and husband, of no fixed place of abode, separated about a year, and have a matter of division of property filed in the High Court.
It is alleged that the woman was at home when she heard a knock on the window. On looking outside, she saw the suspect with a knife.
It is alleged that the man then rammed his Canter into his wife’s car, PXX 509, then went to the lumber yard which is located to the northern side of the house and set it on fire.
By the time the police arrived, the entire lumber yard was engulfed in flames. Damage is estimated to be some $20M.
A resident who spoke to Kaieteur News recalled hearing a “banging sound” on Saturday night, like a vehicle was crashing in to another, but saw nothing since the area was dark. However, the resident recalled hearing persons arguing.
Moments later, the resident saw a huge fire in the vicinity of the lumber yard.
An individual close to the family confirmed that the couple was in the midst of a court battle for the property after being separated for some time now.
