A taxi driver who was allegedly busted with an unlicensed firearm in the backseat of a car was remanded Friday to prison by a City Magistrate.
Jason Prince, 25, of 753 South ‘B’ Field Sophia, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on July 17, last, at Georgetown, he had in his possession one .32 pistol when he was not the owner of a firearm license enforced at the time.
He denied the allegation after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
Attorney-at-law Dexter Todd, in an attempt to secure bail for his client, told the court that his client was not in the vehicle when the gun was allegedly found.
He added that his client was standing next to the vehicle conversing with the two occupants in the vehicle when the police arrived.
However, facts presented by Police Prosecutor, Sanj Singh, differed from those of the lawyer.
The prosecuted stated that on the day in question, ranks from the Narcotics Branch conducted a sting operation and intercepted a silver grey Toyota at Sophia.
At the time of the search, the vehicle had three occupants and the defendant was the lone occupant in the backseat of the vehicle.
The ranks searched the back seat of the vehicle and they saw the defendant sitting next to the firearm.
He was then told of the offence and he denied ownership of the gun, hence he was taken into custody and charged for the offence.
Magistrate Daly after listening to the prosecutor remanded the defendant to prison. He was instructed to make his next court appearance on August 24.
