Three goals in the first half ensured Ruimveldt based Western Tigers Football Club (FC) an eventual and comfortable 3-1 victory over eighth place Cougars FC on Friday night at the National Track and Field Center (NTFC), Leonora.
Playing in the feature match of the double header, the handful of fans that comprised mainly of players had much to cheer about as Western Tigers (27 points) were 3-0 up as early as the 27th minute after Keron Solomon (5th minute), Pernell Schultz (7th minute) and Daniel Wilson had each scored a goal and the prospect of an embarrassing score line for Cougars seemed imminent.
However, Cougars who are in the bottom three of the league table; battling the prospect of relegation, fought back after conceding three early goals. Cougars FC played with more intent against a lackadaisical looking Western Tigers team who were too comfortable with their three-goal lead during the second half and the Berbice-based club was unlucky to only pull one goal back through Romella Johnson in the 74th minute.
Nevertheless, Western Tigers collected their three points and are on course to win the league.
In the opening game, table stragglers Ann’s Grove United (ninth) and New Amsterdam United (10th) that are last in the league, played to a disappointing draw. The game was disappointing because both had excellent opportunities to pick up a win which would’ve granted a much needed three points in the desperate battle against relegation.
After a goalless first half, Maxton Adams fired Ann’s Grove ahead in the 54th minute but the East Coast men couldn’t hold on to their lead and Egbert Simon equalised in the 71st minute. New Amsterdam played great attacking football after leveling the score but they lacked the finishing quality on numerous opportunities afterwards and had to settle for a draw.
The league continues with a triple header tonight at Leonora beginning with Buxton versus Victoria at 16:00hrs, Ann’s Grove against GDF at 18:00hrs and the feature match between Den Amstel and Fruta Conquerors at 20:00hrs.
Admission to the venue is $500; women and children are free. (Calvin Chapman photos and story)
