The Malteenoes Cricket Academy will begin from next Monday at the Club on Thomas Lands and runs until August 3. MSC is catering for 120 students between the ages of 6-18 and registration cost $3,000 and includes lunch each day with sessions be held from 09:00hrs to 15:00hrs with a Lunch break from 12:30hrs to 13:30hrs.
Registrations forms can be uplifted at MSC until Monday morning before the Academy is officially opened by Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth & Sports Dr George Norton.
Yesterday, the club held a press conference where the Media was addressed by PRO Sean Devers, President Winston Semple, Captain Steven Jacobs and Academy Head Coach, Orin Bailey, just back from the Regional U-17 tournament in Trinidad where he was the Coach of the Guyana team which placed third.
Devers said that everything is on track adding that three overseas supporters have joined together to fund 18 underprivileged children to attend the Academy free. Veteran Cricket Commentator Reds Perriera, Mark Harper, International Scorer Bharrat Mangru, Umpire Ryan Banwarie, someone from the Ministry of Communities and a representative from the Child Protection Agency are among the facilitators who will conduct sessions in scoring, umpiring, interviews, etiquette and table manners, cricket broadcasting, cricket reporting, the laws and history of cricket among other topics aimed at building rounded individuals.
The club’s aim is to instill discipline, cricket and life skills in the young participants. Both theory and practical sessions would be done with classroom work taking place during the mornings and outdoor sessions in the afternoons.
Devers informed that apart from Bailey, National Head Coach Esuan Crandon, National Youth Coach Latchman Yadram, former Test players Colin Stuart, Clyde Butts and Reon King will conduct coaching sessions during the Academy which will carter for both Boys and Girls.
Jacobs, MSC’s only present First-Class player, spoke of the benefits of the Academy to young players while Bailey stressed the importance of learning the basics at a young age.
“Malteenoes was founded in 1902 by a Barbadian Taylor and informed that the MSC Cricket Academy was first held in 1993 with aim of broadening the pool of well-rounded young cricketers not only one the field but off of it too” said Semple as he provided a brief of the Club.
He added that not only cricket is played at MSC but also Table Tennis and Darts.
The Academy has produced Test players Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ryan Ramdass and female Windies player Indomattie Goordial, and has been supported by the business community and friends of the Club with their contributions. Malteenoes expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their support.
