The 8th annual GBTI Open served off on Monday last and the competition has seen some fierce action in the opening games.
In the Men’s Open, Ronald Murray defeated Joshua Kaleykeyzi two games to 1; 6-0, 6-7, 6-3. Murray started off the first set aggressively with hard serves and a flurry of cross court forehand winners to leave Kalekeykeyzi unsettled and without answers. The second set, Kaleykeyzi composed himself to play with control as he brought Murray into the net to take the second set to a tiebreak 6-6 (7-5). The third set had some hard hitting rallies, but Murray eventually prevailed 6-3 to win the final game and the match.
In the Over 35 category, Andre Lopes defeated Surrendra Khayyam in straight, unanswered sets; 6-0, 6-0 and Sandeep Chand overpowered Steve David- Longe 6-0, 6-3.
In the Mixed Doubles Open, Leyland Leacock/Kizzy Richmond defeated Philbert Clarke/Diana Bharrat 6-0, 6-1.
Meanwhile, in the Boys’ Singles, Mark McDonald defeated Vaedenand Resaul 6-4, 6-1, Nigel Lowe swept Jared Cruickshank 6-0, 6-0 and Jeremiah Kaleykeyzi defeated Adesh Khayyam 6-4, 6-1.
In the Girls’ Category Sarah Klautky defeated Kalyca Fraser 6-4, 0-6, 10-6. The contest lasted about 2 hrs and saw some lengthy rallies in the grueling sun.
The competition continues daily at the GBTI tennis courts in Bel Air Park from 17:00hrs.
