The Executive of the Berbice Cricket Board met on Thursday last for their monthly meeting and among the topics discussed was the restarting of the 2018 Cricket Season, Cricket Academy 2018, upcoming visit of the Legendary Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira and selection of teams for the upcoming Franchise League Tournament.
At a recent meeting with stakeholders of Berbice Cricket, great concerns were expressed by First Division Clubs about the selection of teams for the Guyana Cricket Board Franchise Three-days and One-day Cricket Tournaments. Clubs expressed great disappointment with the way how the teams were selected, with several outstanding players being bypassed in favour of others close to the people selecting the teams. Teams for the Upper Corentyne, Lower Corentyne/New Amsterdam and West Berbice Franchise were done mostly by one individual selected by the organisers. Clubs like Blairmont, Police, Rose Hall Canje, Albion, Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and Upper Corentyne were left in the cold about team selection, while players were disciplined without any fair process. Players also bitterly complained about not receiving their full financial stipends after the completion of the Franchise.
Berbice Cricket Board President Hilbert Foster at the Stakeholders Meeting committed his Administration to correcting the unwanted situation while warning stakeholders that the Tournaments were not organised by the Berbice Cricket Board but rather the Guyana Cricket Board. The Berbice Cricket Board, he stated would equally represent every Club, Official and Player in Berbice inspite of race, creed, gender or the location in which they reside. The appointment of the Selection Committees is part of the Berbice Cricket Board’s effort to make the process transparent, fair and as broad based as possible.
The West Berbice Selection Committee would be headed by David Black and include Glenroy Fordyce, Javed Saywack, Shabeer Baksh and Dhanraj Ganesh. Successful former Cricket Coach Albert Smith would head the Selection Committee for Lower Corentyne/New Amsterdam Franchise and would be supported by Julian Moore, Balram Samaroo, Tremayne Smartt and Michael Newland. Collis Butts would head the process to select the Upper Corentyne Team with Orvin Mangru, Leslie Solomon, Lakeram Latchman and Junior Blair.
The Berbice Cricket Board has also named a list of persons who should be considered for appointment as Managers and Coaches. They are Winston Smith, Balram Samaroo, Andre Percival, Tremayne Smartt, Albert Smith, David Black, Qwesi Maltay, Lateram Latchman, Neil Rudder, Ameer Rahaman, David Black, Philbert Wilburg and Michael Newland.
The Executives of the Berbice Board stated that they expect all efforts would be made to make sure that the selection of the three teams and their officials would be done in a transparent way. The Berbice Cricket Board and all of its First Division Teams expect that the organisers of the Tournament make every effort to respect the elected officials of Berbice Cricket.
