DEAR EDITOR,
Tacuma Ogunseye, interestingly, writes about trying to maintain political objectivity while, at the same time, he pronounces definitively on the “hope harboured” by Bharrat Jagdeo prior to the CCJ ruling in the third term case. This is only one of the more curious points in his last letter.
He was also definitive in saying that the CCJ ruling provided “tremendous relief to a large number of the populace” and I am curious as to what is definition of large is, surely his views on ‘largeness’ are distorted.
Ogunseye was even more definitive in insisting that an “impartial observer will conclude” that Bharrat Jagdeo was behind the third term case. I beg to insist that impartial observers do not pronounce conclusions on anything without some modicum of evidence.
I wrote before to say that with all the talk about how terrible Bharrat Jagdeo is, you would think that the Caribbean Court of Justice ruling would have ended the sometimes hostile commentary you see in the newspapers. But it seems that this is not to be.
Tacuma Ogunseye chooses to say now that the supporters of Bharrat Jagdeo “are contending that his critics and the coalition are fearful of him winning the 2020 elections” and that this is a “misplaced view” and that “the contention that Jagdeo is unbeatable” is wrong. Curiously enough, he goes on to say that in his judgment Jagdeo would have been an easier candidate for the APNU+AFC Coalition to defeat.
Editor, like I said before, the focus on Bharrat Jagdeo continues because, while the APNU-AFC Government could have gotten ‘help’ in the case before the Caribbean Court Justice, they cannot do anything about the fact that he is still around and active in local politics.
Tacuma Ogunseye seems to substantiate this view of mine because after saying that Bharrat Jagdeo would be an easy candidate for the APNU+AFC to defeat at an election— he kept repeating this point. He goes on to warn that if Bharrat Jagdeo is involved it will “mobilize and galvanize coalition supporters to turn out and vote massively against” the PPPC.He further adds that Bharrat Jagdeo is “signaling that he intends to use every means at his disposal to regain the seat of President of Guyana which he so badly craves” – all without evidence.
It is worth repeating that Guyanese may be seeing these unsubstantiated comments, because what irks the government side so much is that the Caribbean Court of Justice win is only a half-win of sorts because they cannot altogether get rid of Bharrat Jagdeo.
Jagdeo himself has said that he will be around. He said he will be on the campaign trail leading to the 2020 Elections. He said he will be part of the next government. The supporters of the PPP/C have the reassurance that his skills and experience will be available to the next PPP/C government.
Regards,
Baldeo Mathura
