Former Chairman of the Guyana National Sports Council and OECS Sport Director, Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira, is looking forward to his four-day stay in Berbice, as guest of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB).
Perreira was invited by the BCB President Hilbert Foster three months ago and will conduct a wide-ranging programme aimed at identifying areas in need of development but the focus will be on the Senior Berbice clubs and their Youth development.
He hopes to visit as many sports facilities in the Berbice area to get acquainted with the current infrastructure. He’s scheduled to arrive in Guyana tomorrow and will be met by BCB Secretary, Robby Saywack and former National Coach, Albert Smith.
Perreira’s visit to Berbice will not only focus on cricketing matters, since also on his agenda are meetings with the Mayors of New Amsterdam, Rose Hall Town and Corriverton along with the Regional Development Officer to share ideas about developing sport in Berbice.
The Guyana-born International sports Commentator, who now resides in St Lucia, has already confirmed a fundraiser for the BCB with the assistance of popular Guyanese performer, Dave Martins, who has agreed to play free of charge at a venue and date to be decided by the BCB. All expenses associated with Martins’ band will be sponsored by Barons Foods Ltd.
Perreira has also received commitments from several associations to stage exhibitions in the months of August, September and October, and is especially grateful to Boxing, Rugby, Table Tennis, Basketball, Hockey and Body-building Associations who are committed to work with the Berbice authorities in staging the events. The Athletic Association has confirmed they will sponsor three 10Ks and possibly the same amount of 5Ks in New Amsterdam, Rose Hall town and Corriverton.
Perreira hopes the Cycling and Volleyball Associations will also agree to stage exhibitions in the Berbice area.
His first assignment will take place on tomorrow afternoon when he meets with young cricketers and officials of the West Berbice area.
A gift of 24 clickers will be presented to the Berbice Cricket Board for distribution to umpires of the Berbice Umpires Association.
