Windies Skipper Jason Holder has called for quicker pitches for the home series against Bangladesh and according to Head Curator at Providence, Wazim Habib, the track for Sunday’s opening match of the three-match ODI series between Windies and Bangladesh will have some grass left on it to provide consistent pace and bounce.
Habib informed that everything is on track with the pitch and ground preparations for Sunday’s ODI and the second one on Wednesday which is a day/night game.
“We will leave some grass on the pitch for Sunday which is one of the four relayed pitches here which will provide more consistent bounce than before but it should be good to bat on since it should be a true surface,” said Habib who began working on International pitches in 1998 at Bourda when England visited.
He added that the outfield will be cut everyday from today before the first match, adding that the cutter is also used to roll the ground.
St Lucian Kent Crafton is CWI’s Regional Curator and travels to each venue to supervise the preparation of the pitches.
“Two pitches will be prepared for two games here from among the new ones and the one for the night match will be rolled a bit more because of the expected dew. I am confident that we will have two good pitches that will assist the pacers but at the same time be good for playing through the line without having to worry about balls keeping low,” said Crafton.
Beyond the boundary preparations are also completed with some minor finishing touches like repainting the outside off the stands.
“All the major things have already been dealt with. The wash rooms have been checked and are in working order and fully functional, while the lines for internet has already been put in place by the GTTs guys including the Media Centre. The CWI IT guy will connect, test sometime this week, while the floodlights have been tested and will be tested again on Thursday,” stated Assistant Stadium Manager Mahinder Ghanshiam.
Ghanshiam disclosed that the all documentation between the Cricket Guyana and the Stadium has been completed, adding that the replay screen should be at the venue by Friday.
“The Stadium is always in a state of readiness for Mayor Events since maintenance work is ongoing via the Sports Ministry. We also have the CPL starting here from August 9-12 before returning on September 8 and 9 while the play-offs are set for September 11 and 12. The Guyana leg of the Women’s World Cup is scheduled from November 9-17. So we are ready,” stated Ghanshiam.
Tickets for the two games at Providence went on sale from yesterday at the GCB office on Regent Street Bourda, while the teams are scheduled to arrive tonight.
The Guyana matches have not been aggressively promoted by CGI, while new NCN Marking Manager Dellon Murray said the State owned Radio and Television station will not be carrying Radio commentary or broadcasting the game on TV.
