Guyana moved closer to lifting the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional U17 50-over title following a 31-run victory Jamaica when the fourth round concluded yesterday in Trinidad and Tobago.
Guyana were asked to bat on a moist Gilbert Park pitch and Sachin Singh and Navindra Persaud added 33 for the opening stand before Persaud was caught off Rajiv Redhi for six, while Yeudistir Persaud poor run of form continued when he was bowled by Brandon English for two leaving the score on 38-2.
Singh wasn’t afraid to play his shots and took boundaries off Akeel Hanchand before smashing Jemario Wint and Brandon English for sixes as he added 28 with Seon Glasgow.
After hitting two fours Glasgow was taken at long-leg off Romanie Jacob for 15, however Singh continued to time the ball well and put on 24 with Andre Seepersaud before the left-handed Singh who looked well set for his second half century of the tournament attempted to sweep Jacob and was lbw for 48; he faced 99 balls and counted two fours and three sixes.
Dwain Dick was then run out for 13 in a terrible mix up with Seepersaud before the latter shared in a 43-run fifth wicket stand with Leon Swami to prop up Guyana’s total. Swami was his usual aggressive self, hitting two fours and a six before he was caught off English for 25 which came off 26 balls in the latter stages of the innings. Seepersaud was lbw to Hanchand for 30 which came off 80 balls with a solitary boundary as Guyana managed 174-7. Jacob claimed 2-24 and English 2-37.
Pacer Silvan Williams handed Guyana the breakthrough by uprooting the stumps of O’Neil Roberts without a run on the board. Daniel Beckford struck Williams and Sheldon Charles for fours and shared in a second wicket stand of 32 with Romaine Bennet who was removed by Dick for 11. Dick troubled the batmen with his steady line, however it was left arm spinner Niran Bissu and leg spinner Nigel Deodat who reaped further success for Guyana.
Deodat removed Razack Williams for three before Bissu picked up three quick wickets; he had Lennox Simpson (14) and Joseph Simon (04) caught in the in-field before Jacob was neatly stumped by Yeudistir Persaud without scoring as Jamaica were restricted to 78-6. Beckford looked solid as timed the ball well and brought up his fifty off 113 balls with two fours, but wickets continued to fall at the other end with Seepersaud removing English and Redhi for nine and two respectively, leaving Jamaica on 105-8. Swamy then bowled Wintz, who played back to a good length ball, for six before Beckford and Hanchand put on 30 for the last wicket, however Swamy had Hanchand caught at long-off for one to seal victory for Guyana.
Beckford finished unbeaten on 73; Jamaica were bowled out for 143 in 48.5 overs. Bissu captured 3-15 off fours overs, Seepersaud 2-17, Swamy 2-18, while Dick, Seepersaud and Williams had one each.
At National Cricket Centre, Barbados beat Leeward Islands. Batting first Barbados posted 245-8 with Matthew Forde scoring 68, Antonio Morris 50 and Jayden Leacock 42. Leeward Islands were bowled out for 115 in reply. Jayden Hunte picked up three wickets and Nicholas Austin two.
At Brian Lara stadium, Trinidad and Tobago beat Windward Islands.
Guyana will now take on Barbados in the final round today at NCC and a win will guarantee them the title.
