A man who received a fractured skull at the hands of a young man with whom he had a disagreement was on Friday compensated for his injuries.
Twenty-one-year-old Akeem Lammy of 685 Section ‘B’ Block X Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, offered to pay off the victim. His decision resulted in the charge being withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
This was disclosed on Friday when the matter was called in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
As a result, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan whom the trial was being heard before, since last month, had no other alternative but to quash the trial.
Lammy was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on June 10, last, at Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust, with intent to commit murder, he unlawfully wounded Johnny Ramdeen.
On June 10, last, the defendant and the victim who are known to each other had an argument.
The prosecutor added that the defendant became annoyed and armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt the victim several lashes about his head.
Ramdeen was then picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
On Lammy’s first court appearance before the Chief Magistrate, he viciously assaulted a police officer who was in the process of removing his handcuffs.
When the court orderly unlocked one of the handcuffs, Lammy erupted, kicking the police ranks about their bodies.
The Chief Magistrate had to put the court in recess and retired to her chambers.
The entire ordeal lasted for about ten minutes; reporters and police officers were locked inside of the courtroom. The defendant was still there shouting, “I want to die; y’all left me let me die. Me ain’t able go in jail.”
It took five police ranks to stabilize and handcuff the defendant who was behaving in a disorderly manner and crying uncontrollably.
The defendant’s sister, who was also in the courtroom, ran into the prisoner’s dock in an attempt to calm down her brother. But to her surprise, she received a cuff to her face.
