The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) under the watchful eyes of coach Lawrence Adonis has begun preparations in earnest of the National Rugby Sevens team, which is also known as the Green Machine, that will be competing at the 2018 Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games which will be hosted in Barranquilla, Colombia from July 19th to August 3.
The squad, which consists of 12 players, had their first training session yesterday at Parade ground on Middle and Carmichael streets and Coach Adonis explained that the exercises placed major emphasis on offensive and defensive speed, and the lineout facets of the Green Machine’s game. In addition, the national ruggers had the opportunity to be tested by the reserve squad in a training game.
When the coach was quizzed on the cohesiveness of his squad that will be departing Guyana on July 25 for Colombia, he noted that, “It’s good to have everybody together at one time but right now we have three players down in Trinidad but I believe with the players we have together now along with the two days that we will have in Colombia prior to our first match, it will be enough to see us get it together.”
Rugby is the only sport to have won Gold for Guyana in the CAC Games after they attained glory in the 21st edition in 2010 held in Puerto Rico and Adonis is very confident of his troops’ chances of scrumming to a medal this time around.
Currently, the only disadvantage facing the Green Machine is the lack of a proper ground to train. The coach shed light on the issue, “This has been the hardest part and we have been working from place to place. We had a period with the National Park but it got sloppy, we have been over to the YMCA and now we are at Parade ground.”
The altitude in Colombia was perceived to be a bit of a worry for the Guyanese but Coach Adonis was adamant that it won’t be a problem for his team as he believes it is similar to the breathing conditions in Guyana. The full team reads Dwayne Schroeder (Captain), Claudius Butts, Avery Corbin, Richard Staglon, Peabo Hamilton, Patrick King, Ronald Mayers, Jamal Angus, Godfrey Broomes, Rondel McArthur and Ryan Gonsalves.
