After more than a year of deterioration, the fate of the Charity Wharf is certain especially since the Ministry of Public Infrastructure has not yet addressed the issue.
On Tuesday the Region Two Administration said that it will make another appeal to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, to intervene in the matter. And it made this appeal last Tuesday through the Regional Chairman, Daveanand Ramdatt and Regional Executive Officer Rupert Hopkinson.
Hopkinson who is the accounting officer of the Region, disclosed during his reports at RDC that the region does not have sufficient resources to fund the project.
Based on an engineer’s report presented some time late last year, the structure was described as being very unsafe. The report revealed that most of the piles beneath the structure are rotten and no longer support the wharf.
The report concluded that the solid concrete structure is dangerously sitting on a few remaining piles, which are very feeble and likely to give out. Further observation also indicates that the wharf has since dropped more than four inches from its original position.
The wharf is believed to be a 38-year-old landmark which supports the Charity Marketing center. The marketing center on the other hand, houses a number of businesses in charity. Stakeholders fear that if the wharf collapses at any time, there may be multiple casualties.
The regional administration wrote to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure last year, seeking their intervention. The Ministry responded earlier this year, however, stating that the Wharf is the responsibility of the RDC.
The REO who asked that the matter be viewed as a national issue, made it clear last Tuesday that the region is in no position to fund such a project.
Hopkinson added, “We don’t have anything to work on the Charity marketing center, so we are again issuing a call for collaboration to get this structure complete.”
