Former Malteenoes players Felix Walker and Earl 0Leitch along with Dave Jagernauth on behalf of Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop have combined to pay the cost 18 less fortunate Children who can’t afford to attend this year’s Malteenoes Cricket Academy since the overseas trio does not want anyone to be denied this wonderful opportunity due their inability to pay.
Walker, who lives in England and Leitch and Jagernauth from New York, said they did not feel the G$3,000 Registration fee should prevent a child from experiencing the benefits of learning about cricket and developing life skills from the two-week Academy.
The Academy commences on July 23 and caters for Boys and Girls between the ages of 6-18.
Class-room work and on field cricket skills will be thought at the Academy which has produced several First-Class players including Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ryan Ramdass and Indomattie Goordial (West Indies Women) who played Test Cricket.
The Academy will include sessions by qualified Coaches, while facilitators will talk on Education, Social Skills, Health and Hygiene Etiquette, Child Protection, Laws and History of Cricket, Umpiring and Scoring. Inculcating discipline to students will be a critical aspect of the Academy.
Leitch, a member of the 1986 Malteenoes team which won every National Youth tournament that year, said his time spent at the club helped to make him the man he is today.
“I grew up in Albouystown and understand the plight of kids who miss out on life changing opportunities because they can’t afford to attend programmes like this one,” Leitch stated.
Jagernauth works with Kids in the USA playing Baseball and Cricket and echoed Leitch’s thoughts.
“Academies like this develops team work, discipline, respect for their peers and Coaches and most of all life-long friendships,” Jagernauth said.
Malteenoes has begun identifying this category of children and encourages those who know of children who like cricket but cannot afford to pay the registration fee to get them signed up.
Only the first 18 such participants will be accepted since no more than 120 students can be accommodated.
The Academy runs from 09:00hrs to 15:00hrs each week day with Lunch being provided and registration forms can be uplifted at Malteenoes (Tel 225-6509) in Thomas Lands.
