A labourer yesterday made an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.
Twenty-four-year-old David Europe, of Craig, East Bank Demerara, was not required to plead to the charge, which stated that on January 22, 2017 at Craig, East Bank Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of sixteen.
The matter was held in-camera.
According to information, the victim and the defendant are known to each other and they used to communicate via social media.
On the day in question, the defendant went over to the victim home and while there, Europe held her down on the bed and forcefully had sex with her.
The teen then told her parents what had happened and they reported the matter to the station.
An investigation was carried out and the defendant was arrested and charged for the offence.
The Magistrate after listening to the facts granted Europe $170,000 bail.
Conditions of the bail are that he must not go within 50 feet of the defendant and must report to the Ruimveldt Police Station every Friday until the completion of the trial.
The unrepresented man was instructed to make his next court appearance on July 18.
