Forty-four murders in six months, nine percent drop in serious crimes

The Guyana Police Force has recorded 44 murders in the past six months. And with the exception of rape and gun robberies, serious crimes were down by five percent in comparison to the same period last year.
Statistics released yesterday showed that there was a 25 percent decrease in murder, with 44 murders as against 59 for the previous year.
Of the 44 homicides recorded, 20 were disorderly murders, 12 domestic-related murders and eight robbery-murders, while the motive in four cases was unknown.
There was also a two percent increase in robbery under arms in which firearms were used (298 as against 304 this year; an eight percent decrease in armed robberies in which instruments other than firearms are used (161 as against 116) a 21 percent decrease in robbery with aggravation; a 30 percent decrease in larceny from the person; a nine percent increase in rape (129 as against 140) a three percent decrease in burglary and a 10 percent decrease in break and enter and larceny.
Police have taken 67 illegal firearms off the streets so far this year, compared to 69 for the corresponding period last year.
They include 40 pistols, 17 revolvers, seven shotguns, one sub-machine gun, and two rifles. Thirty-one firearms were seized in ‘A’ Division; six from ‘B’ Division; six from ‘C’ Division; four from ‘D’ Division; four from ‘E’ Division and 14 from ‘F’ Division and two from ‘G’ Division.
