Guyana will be looking for another victory when they face defending champions Trinidad and Tobago today at Gilbert Park as the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional U-17 50-over tournament continues in the Twin Island Republic.
The Guyanese have boosted their confidence following a 69-run win over Leeward Islands on Thursday at Brain Lara Stadium, while rain prevented any play in the other two matches.
There were several encouraging signs from their opening game against Windwards and their success against the Leewards on Thursday. Two batmen, Sachin Singh and Seon Glasgow got half centuries; the innings of Leon Swami under pressure that boosted his team; their bowling and fielding improved considerably which was evident when they restricted the Leeward Islands.
Apart from the aforementioned trio, the other batmen will have to put their heads down and give their bowlers a decent total to defend since most of the surfaces here have been batting friendly. With the victory on Thursday, they have joined the host nation and Windwards in the top three on the points table.
Swami helped Guyana recover in the second round and has shown that he can handle himself well under pressure at the crease; he is also a capable fast bowler, while Singh and Navindra Persaud look fairly well at the top of the order.
So far spinners have dominated mainly due to the lack of willingness by the batsmen to use their feet and this is one area the Coaches must work on; Singh and Glasgow provided an example in the opening fixture and a lot will once again depend on them to marshal the batting.
While there are certain areas that need attention, Dwain Dick is a talented player but must curb his attacking instinct at times to score big, while Nigel Deodat, Yeudistir Persaud and Andre Seepersaud are all capable batters.
Silvan Williams has done a fair job with the new ball so far and has won his team bonus points, while the other pacers Swami and Sheldon Charles are also capable.
Trinidad and Tobago will look the likes of Leonardo Julien, Rivaldo Ramlogan, Anderson Maahase and Nicholas Ali to boost their batting, while their bowling will be dependent on leg spinner Sameer Ali, Vanir Maharaj and Jayden Seales.
The pitch at Gilbert Park is expected to favour the batsmen with some help for the spinners, but the weather has not been cricket friendly over the past two days.
In other fixtures, Barbados will take on Jamaica at Brian Lara Stadium and Windward Islands will face Leeward Islands at the National Cricket Centre. All matches start at 09:30hrs.
