Both Guyana (Boys & Girls) teams are one match away of from regaining their Caribbean Junior Squash title which they lost last year on home soil after dominating Junior Caribbean Squash for the previous 12 years when they finished unbeaten yesterday.
It’s a virtual final for the Girls after both teams beat Bermuda yesterday afternoon at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, Jamaica while the boys qualified for today’s final by winning all of their games.
Barbados is just ahead of the Guyana in Girls in the round robin format and plays each other in the final round game today from 10:00hrs. Whichever team wins today will be declared team champions.
But it will be a tough assignment for the South American lasses since the Bajans will be spearheaded by 16-year-old Meagan Best who rose to prominence after winning the Girl’s U17 category at the US Junior Open squash championship in 2017. Meagan also became the first squash player from a Caribbean nation to win a US Junior Open squash championship title.
The Guyanese girls will bank on their only Medalist in the individual category, Abosaide Cadogan, who won ‘Silver’, while team Captain Rebecca Low should be a force to be reckoned with against the Bajans whose standard of Squash, inspired by the exploits of Best, has improved tremendously in the recent past.
The Guyanese girls go into today final round on the back of wins against Cayman Islands (4-1), Jamaica (3-2) and Trinidad and Tobago (4-1) before beating Bermuda 5-0 yesterday afternoon.
The Guyana Boys team got past Bermuda last evening, while defending Champions Barbados kept their hopes of back-to-titles alive by beating Trinidad and Tobago last evening to set up what is anticipated to be a riveting contest between the top two teams in the tournament. Guyana’s Boys advanced to the final by beating OECS 4-1, T&T 5-0, Jamaica 4-1 and Bermuda 5-0
