DEAR EDITOR,
I felt it absolutely necessary that I say something about this epidemic of domestic violence sweeping Guyana from one end to the other. This plague is not restricted to just one socioeconomic or educational slice of our country it is manifesting itself across the societal spectrum.
Age, education, economic status or standing in the society poses no barrier to the perpetrators. This brings me to the story covered in the KN about the unfortunate death of a female at the hands of her male acquaintance in the Village of Rosignol, WCB.
What is just as sad and troubling to me about the demise of this female, is the attitude of her neighbours and their gross lack of concern for this woman’s safety
According to the reports, the Neanderthal she was associated with regularly abused her during their frequent alcohol binges. On the fateful day, during one of these sessions, he commenced his abuse sometime in the afternoon and continued well into the night stopping only after the screams of his victim ceased.
‘Neighbours from Hell’ is my only description of those who heard the wailing and desperate screams for help and did absolutely nothing until after she was silenced forever. What kind of people are these? Apparently, the abuser did this on a regular basis. Had the neighbours acted the first time he abused this unfortunate woman and called the police, she may have been alive today – not to negate her responsibility in any way. But instead, they enjoyed the show and did nothing.
Is this what our society has degenerated into? A ‘none of my business’ attitude! My other concern is the courts, Magistrates and at times Judges. Their whimsical dispensation of justice is head-scratching. There seems to be no guidelines or structured sentencing.
Justice seems to depend on which side of the bed the court officer gets up on. Domestic violence, the use of a weapon during the commission of a crime, murder and corruption should attract the most attention. Not that the other offences should not, but the imbalances are glaring.
It is my hope that the callous indifference displayed by the neighbours at Rosignol Village is not widespread. The least they can do is to attend her funeral and hope the flowers she can never smell soothe their seared consciences.
Respectfully
Claudeston Massiah
