An autopsy conducted yesterday on the decomposing bodies of Deonarine Liliah, a 61-year-old Pandit and businessman of Lot 25 Craig Street, South Half, Section ‘G’ Campbellville and his son, 28-year- old Gopaul Liliah, showed 66 stab wounds to the bodies.
The bodies of the father and son were discovered after a tenant, Leewattie Ganpat, who lives downstairs, made a report to Kitty Police Station after not seeing the duo since Saturday.
Ganpat said that she saw her landlord and his son in the yard on Saturday around 06:00hrs. They spoke briefly. Ganpat said later that night around 21:00hrs while using the Wi-Fi that she shares with the Liliahs, she heard some walking upstairs after which the Wi-Fi went off.
She said that she heard more walking, that was the last of the movements that she heard from upstairs. Ganpat who is a Home Aid worker had told police that she was looking out for her landlord to tell him that the Wi-Fi had gone off, but decided to leave it until the next day.
On Sunday when Ganpat looked out for the elderly Liliah, to tell him about the Wi-Fi problem she did not see him. She took it for nothing since on Sundays; she would not see much of him normally.
After not being able to locate her landlord for two days, Ganpat made a report to the station on Tuesday around 09:30hrs. She was then accompanied to the residence by a police corporal and other ranks. When the police ranks arrived at the home, the ranks found the back door ajar.
Upon entering the house, they discovered the body of Gopaul Liliah lying face down on the floor in a pool of blood, with a red jersey wrapped around his head. He was clad in a grey jersey and a grey boxer shorts.
The father Deonarine was seen lying on his back in the living room, He was clad in white long pants and his face covered with a multi-coloured top. Multiple stab wounds were seen on his body.
The entire building was checked but no sign of forced entry was observed. Police recovered CCTV from nearby cameras, which revealed that an unidentified male was seen jumping the Western fence and entering the home, through the northern front door.
He exited with two bulky bags and a bucket.
On Tuesday afternoon, police detained a suspect who was said to be in possession of one of the victim’s cell phones.
Another individual was detained yesterday morning in Garnett Street.
“The post-mortem examination of Deonarine and Gopaul Liliah were done by Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh who gave the cause of deaths as multiple incised wounds.
