Guyanese need to get smarter on issues of oil – US Ambassador
US Ambassador, President David Granger and Ms. Holloway share a toast
United States Ambassador to Guyana, Perry Holloway last evening noted that while the nation‘s discovery of oil is a big deal, the people of Guyana need to take it seriously and get smarter on the issue.
Holloway was at the time addressing a gathering at a reception held in observance of the 242th United States Independence anniversary at the Marriott Hotel in Kingston, Georgetown.
Ambassador Holloway noted the confirmed oil reserves right now has put Guyana in the top 25 countries of the world, ahead of countries like the United Kingdom, Colombia, and Trinidad and Tobago.
However, with the discovery of oil offshore, Holloway noted that everyone needs to take it seriously and get smarter on the issue.
He said, “While the Government of Guyana is currently doing many of the things that need to be done, much more will need to be done. I know President (David) Granger is committed to getting this right, but he cannot do it without the help of all Guyanese.”
According to Holloway with a couple of more discoveries, Guyana will even pass Norway.
“This is serious business. When Liza 1 begins producing in early 2020, it will produce 120,000 barrels a day. That is more than all 100 oil wells in Trinidad produce in a day.
“One well in Guyana will produce more oil in one day than 100 wells in Trinidad and Tobago… Guyana could eventually get to 500,000 barrels a day and some say even a million is possible with a little luck.”
As in any democracy, the US ambassador said there is need to hold elected officials accountable, as well as domestic and international companies operating in one’s country.
“That said, you also need to analyze and make decisions based on facts and reality, not fiction and surrealism,” he added.
