A weeping Sheldon Lynch was locked away, yesterday, in the dark prisoner’s holding area where he maintained that he did not sexually penetrate an 11-year-old girl. He also claims that the little girl lied on him.
This was moments after a 12-member mixed jury convicted him for the crime at the High Court in Georgetown.
He was given a life sentence by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. This is the man’s third life sentence in five months for the offence.
On August 22, 2015, Lynch, 46, of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, engaged in sexual penetration of an 11-year-old girl. Lynch, who was represented by Attorney-at-law Clyde Forde, had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge. Kaieteur News understands that the two are known to each other. On the day in question, the girl, who is now 14, went over to Lynch’s house where he forced her onto a bed and inserted his penis into her vagina without a condom.
After the act, the little girl complained to her mother, who in turn, reported the matter to the police.
Investigations were carried out and Lynch was arrested and charged for the crime.
Back in March 2018, Lynch was given two life sentences, which are to run consecutively. A jury, then, had convicted him for raping a 10-year-old girl on two occasions.
The events occurred between December 7, 2010 and January 25, 2013 in Essequibo.
He only becomes eligible for parole after serving 35 years. It was Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall who had imposed those life sentences.
The victim in this case had revealed that Lynch raped her on several occasions. The young girl said that he would rape her when no one was at home and would then warn her to keep it a secret.
“I feel like my life is hopeless. I feel terrible. After I told the Welfare about what he did to me, the children at school would laugh at me,” the young girl confided to a Social Worker.
The Social Worker said that the child told her that as a result of taunting from her peers, she dropped out of school. The rape survivor had also told the Social Worker that on numerous occasions she would consider committing suicide whenever she reflected on what Lynch had done to her.
The young girl added that she is afraid to be in a relationship.
In handing down the life sentences on the previous occasion, Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall chastised Lynch for his actions. She told him that he treated the minor like his “woman.”
“You violated her trust and took her innocence. You have scarred her for life,” Justice Ramlall had said to a crying Lynch who expressed no remorse after the jury’s decision.
