Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools Tournament… School of the Nations lose by 3 wickets to QC of Barbados

Guyana’s School of the Nations got off to an inauspicious start in the 2018 Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools cricket Tournament when they were badly beaten by seven wickets by Queens College of Barbados in a rain affected match yesterday.
In the opening round of the tournament which began in 1986, the Guyanese crashed to 65 all out from 14 overs in a game reduced from 40 to 34 overs due to overnight rain before the Bajans eased to victory; finishing on 67-3 with 20.2 overs to spare.
QC asked the Guyana School to bat in overcast conditions on a track with lots of moisture and a sluggish James Bryan outfield and were destroyed by Ethan Hicks (4-31) and Reneil Smith (16).
Tuen Hincks (5) and Rahul Singh (8) carried the score to 15 before Smith who removed Singh and Andrew Samaroo for duck before Hicks sent his unrelated namesake packing to leave the score on 18-3.
Rajendra Singh, the only batsman to reach double figures with 11, joined diminutive right-hander Wayne Bollers and stroked three boundaries before he provided Kayode Miller with his third catch as Hicks struck again to leave the score on 31-4 to trigger a dramatic slump which saw four wickets falling for four runs to leave School of the Nation in tatters at 35-7.
Bollers (1), Mahendra Singh (0) and Tathesh Shivrattan (3) were all quickly blown away by Smith and Hicks as poor shot-selections aided their demise.
Dominic Roberts (6) had his stumps scattered by Hicks at 44-8 before Dambuka Nggando (6) and Yogeshwar Seecharan (6) carried the score to 65 before they were both removed on that score.
When the Bajans began their run chase, the four spectators in the stands watched as Ajani Waterman was caught and bowled first ball by Shivrattan before Osaze Smith fell to Nggando off his first ball to leave the home School on 2-0 in 1.1 overs.
When Nggando trapped Aaron Griffith (1) LBW at 6-3 the Guyanese were back in the game before Marc Cyrus, who reached the boundary six times in an unbeaten 47 and Hicks (11), batted responsibly in a match winning unfinished 61-run stand as QC galloped to an emphatic win. Nggando had 2-8.
The CWI sanctioned tournament attracts U-19 school teams to compete with their local, Regional and International counterparts, while the best two teams qualify for the final at the Kensington Oval.
After the final, a festival game is played between the Caribbean teams and a combined side from the UK.
School of the Nations’ Coach Darien Best said he was disappointed with his team’s performance. “The batsmen did not apply themselves and tried to play too many shots. Our bowlers bowled well and got three quick wickets but their batsmen recognized the threat and batted accordingly,” said Best, who is the Youth Coach at Malteenoes.
