Payless Variety Store’s Main Branch on Wellington Street in Georgetown recently contributed a quantity of Tennis balls and Plastic plates to the Malteenoes Cricket Academy for their two-week programme which starts on July 23.
The balls will be used by the students ranging between the ages of 6-13, while the 14-18s will use Leather Balls, while plates will be used by everyone.
In addition to their main branch in the City, Payless has branches in New Amsterdam, Berbice and Vreed-in-Hoop in West Demerara and has been a great supporter of Sports, while its owner is a former Athlete.
The donation was made by Supervisor of City branch to Division one cricketer Marcus Watkins, who thanked Payless for their contribution which he said will help the youngsters develop into hopefully well-rounded individuals who will leave their mark in some area of cricket.
“Ronnie Sarwan, Ryan Ramdass and Indomattie Goordial were past Academy students who played Test Cricket,” Watkins said while encouraging youngsters to join this year’s Academy.
The cost to register is $3,000 and forms can be picked at the Thomas Lands club and registration closes on July 20.
The Academy will include class room and field work which will provide the tools to become Cricketers, Umpires, Scorers, Journalists and Broadcasters.
Qualified facilitators will conduct technical and physical sessions, while giving talks on the importance of Education, Social Skills, Health and Hygiene, Etiquette, Child Protection, Law and History of Cricket, Umpiring and Scoring.
