Guyana will begin their Cricket West Indies Regional U17 50-over campaign against the Windward Islands today at the National Cricket Centre in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.
Led by the talented Sachin Singh, the Guyanese will be looking for their first title at this level and their participation in the Guyana Cricket Board inter county U19 tournament has done their preparation well.
Singh who plays for Demerara Cricket Club will have as his deputy Andre Seepersaud a talented all-rounder.
Singh, who is in third year at this level, feels his team’s chance of going all the way is good. “The team is a balanced one which has depth in the batting. Most of the players have been around since the U15 level so they have a fair amount of experience playing away from home and can adjust to the conditions faster,” he added.
He added that the bowling is fairly strong and the players are eager to go. “The surface is likely to favour the spinners which will be to our advantage,” he said.
Guyana batting will be led by Singh who is expected to be partnered by Navindra Singh at the top of the order. While a lot will depend on Singh to set the foundation for a huge total, valuable support is expected to come from Dwain Dick, Yeudistir Persaud, Seon Glasgow, Sheldon Charles and Nigel Deodat.
Despite being in his first year at this level, Dick, who represented Demerara in the U19 inter county tournament, is a gifted cricketer and is expected to dominate in this tournament. His steady off-spin bowling will compliment his batting and is another option available to Singh in the bowling department.
Berbician Glasgow has the ability to play shots on both sides of the wicket and is a joy to watch once he gets going. He also bowls off- spin.
Yeudistir Persaud performed exceptionally well in the inter county competition. He displayed immense concentration which was evident in his unbeaten 90 against Demerara U19 at the Everest Cricket Club. He is the lone wicket-keeper selected.
Essequibian all-rounder Sheldon Charles has the ability to hit the ball hard and could be used at the top of the order to utilise the power play overs.
Leon Swamy and Nigel Deodat give added strength to both the bowling and batting and will find the pitch at the National Cricket Centre much to their liking.
Leg spinner Niran Bisssu can create problems for the opposition since he has the ability to spin the ball hard but his control and consistency will be the key factors.
Teams will be given bonus points for every wicket taken by fast bowlers and Guyana has a number of options in this area with the likes of Swami, Charles, Silvan Williams, Gevon Schultz and Sachin Singh.
The weather here seems to be fine but the forecast has predicted a few showers.
Windward Islands will depend on Simeon Gerson, Garvin Serieux Jr, Lee Solomon, Dominic Auguste, Ackeem Auguste, Keygan Arnold and Tyran Theodore.
The Guyana squad reads; Sachin Singh (Capt.), Andre Seepersaud, Seon Glasgow, Navindra Persaud, Yeudistir Persaud, Hrithik Singh, Niran Bissu, Nigel Deodat, Gevon Schultz, Bhadesh Parsotam, Sheldon Charles, Silvan Williams, Leon Swamy and Dwain Dick. Orin Bailey is the Coach and Nazeer Mohamed Manager.
In other fixtures Trinidad and Tobago will play Barbados at Brian Lara Cricket Academy and Leeward Islands will face Jamaica at Gilbert Park.
