In their debut season, Western Tigers are on track to win the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) third edition of the Elite League after finishing top of the points standing after the first half of the tournament.
In their opening match of the second phase of the FIFA sponsored league, Daniel Wilson bagged a brace to lead his team to a commanding 4-1 victory over the Linden based Milerock FC.
Wilson’s goals came during both halves of the match with his first strike in the third minute and the second in the 56th minute during the last match of a triple header that was played at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora.
Western Tigers, who had six incoming players to their squad including Kelsey Benjamin and Curtez Kellman from Georgetown Football Club (GFC), controlled the match throughout and Quason McAulay (32nd) and Kareem Knight (45th) added to the score sheet, Rawle Gittens scored a late consolation for the losers.
After the match, Coach of Western Tigers; Calvin Allen, explained that, “Our aim is to win the tourney. It will be a huge achievement to do so in our first outing.”
Although Tigers came out the match with three points, outscoring Milerock 4-1, the meticulous Coach Allen was not satisfied and he posited that it was a scrappy display from his side and in addition to integrating the six new transfers into his system, a lot more needs to be done on his squad.
With the win, Tigers are top of the points table with 24 points, slightly ahead Fruta Conquerors who have 23.
The competition resumes on Friday with a double header at GFC ground with Milerock versus Victoria Kings at 19:00hrs and Cougars versus Victoria Kings at 21:00hrs.
