Overseas based former national cyclist and now community activist Franco Crawford is teaming up with the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) to stage a 45 miles cycle race in observance of his 50 birthday. The feature 45miles cycle race is set for Sunday, 15 July.
Crawford, who is still a member of the FACC although residing and still rides in England and on the North American circuit, is a regular visitor back home.
On his regular sojourn home he always remembers his club where he extends his benevolence to the club, the members and members of the community with numerous gifts and other forms of assistance.
Crawford, who has now established himself as a community activist and is also spreading the word of GOD, does not only assist cycling, but gives to other sports and community activities as well.
The event, which is for members of the FACC only, will pedal off at 10:30hrs. The riders will move off from the junction of Main and Alexander Streets, proceed along the Corentyne highway to the Bush Lot Gas Station before turning back to finish at its place of origin.
Prizes will be awarded to the first five finishers and the first two 12-14 riders, while there will be eight prime point prizes.
Every cyclist that completes the race will be presented with a prize where over $100,000 worth in prizes will be distributed. There will also be a special prize for the oldest cyclist.
Crawford stated that he is motivated to assist his fellow Guyanese because he feels happy to be able to return to Guyana and give back to his home country and community. He remembered his early upbringing when he hadn’t a proper bike and gear to participate. He continues to be impressed by the talent that is available in Guyana.
Crawford handed over the check during the week to coordinator of the event and club coach Randolph Roberts.
Crawford is expected to participate in the race and match pedals with his local counterparts.
Roberts in expressing appreciation thanked Crawford for always remembering the club. He used the opportunity to call on other past members, overseas based Guyanese and businessman and more so the Government to take a page out of Crawford’s book and come forward and assist the youths so that they could be kept away from the ills of the society and illicit activities.
